Rhino Walking Safaris offers exclusive traversing in 12 000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the only official wilderness concession awarded in the Kruger National Park. Approximately 10km North East (as the hornbill flies) of Skukuza Rest Camp, the concession shares a 15km boundary with Mala Mala in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, with game moving freely between the two reserves. The concession comprises environmentally sensitive areas previously unexplored, with a huge diversity of both fauna and flora – an ideal setting for wilderness walking safaris in an internationally renowned big five area.
We specialise in luxury walking safaris, the most rewarding way to discover and experience the secrets of the wilderness. Our walking trails are limited to 8 guests guided by two armed rangers. Our guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualification possible in South Africa.
Situated within our concession are three types of accommodation, Rhino Post Safari Lodge, Plains Camp and the Sleep Outs; each unique in there own way, we recommend a combination of all three to truly experience this one of a kind safari trail.
Rhino Post Safari Lodge
Elegant 16 bed Lodge, 8 suites
Set on the banks of the Mutlumuvi Riverbed on the Southern end of our concession, our luxurious trails “base” lodge. Built using natural materials of stone, wood, thatch & canvas, this organic camp has 8 suites.
The utmost care was taken to minimise the environmental impact of the lodge, and to that end, no concrete was used in the building’s foundations, careful consideration was taken in the layout of the camp, battery power is used for lighting and special indigenous Reedbed System processes the bathroom waste.
Each suite includes an overhead fan and lounge area with stunning views of the Mutlumuvi riverbed including those from the bathroom, decks and outdoor shower.
Dining area under Tamboti trees - Allows for al fresco dinners, cool lunches in the heat of a summer afternoon and snug winter dining.
Swimming pool & lounge overlooking an active waterhole - Situated overlooking the riverbed with an active waterhole, the swimming pool offers the weary traveller welcome relief from the heat of the day. The lounge, with its extensive wine cellar, fireplace and bar provide a perfect setting for an afternoon or evening sundowner.
Rejuvenation centre - For something special, enjoy the pampering of the Rhino Post Rejuvenation Centre, opening in September 2004. A soothing foot massage after an exciting morning walk, followed by a plunge into the pool is always an invigorating way to start the day.
Morning Safari Walks - A typical day would include an early start, a cup of fresh coffee or tea, after which guests set out on either a morning walk or game drive. Guests on foot follow rhino trails and elephant paths for approximately 3 to 4 hours. Returning to the lodge guests enjoy a leisurely brunch and time to relax around the pool overlooking the waterhole.
Evening Game Drives - In the late afternoon after a delicious high tea, guests will enjoy an evening game drive, winding down with sundowners, watching an African sunset and spotting nocturnal animals in the park. Back at the lodge enjoy a sumptuous dinner on the deck or in the riverbed, as you recount the day’s events all the while accompanied by the night sounds of the bush.
Only one activity will be carried out at any one time at Rhino Post Safari Lodge. Activities are planned ahead of guests arrival to ensure there is no confusion as to schedule of the game walks and drives. Guests will not be able to request alternative activities from the group on the same day, except by prior arrangement with the Rhino Walking Safaris. Should guests desire a ‘private’ game drive or walk, the reservation team will need to be informed at least 7 working days ahead of arrival to source an additional guide, the cost of which would be for the guests account.
Plains Camp, Kruger National Park
Situated in the heart of the wilderness concession and built in authentic pioneer tradition, it has the serenity of a 19th century naturalists rest.
Overlooking spectacular Timbitene Plain & waterhole - Guest will either arrive at Plains camp on foot or by lodge vehicle, depending where their previous night was spent.
African Explorer style tents - It offers 4 comfortably furnished en suite tents, nestled in an acacia Knobthorn thicket.
Safari Trails - After an early morning wake-up and an invigorating cup of fresh coffee in the lounge, guests set off on trail where our guides will share their experience of the diverse areas situated within the proximity of Plains Camp.
Plunge pool - The heat of the day will be spent at the camp, enjoying our small Africana book collection or the plunge pool overlooking the plain, which is often host to zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion. Afternoon walks and sundowners complete a fulfilling African experience.
Overhead fans and 24 hour lighting - A generator and a back-up battery system power the fans and lighting which can also be used to re-charge camera batteries at specific times.
The morning activity at Plains Camp will always be a safari walk, and the afternoon activity will be either a safari walk or game drive (by special request). Only one afternoon activity will be carried out at any one time as activities are planned ahead of guests’ arrival to ensure there is no confusion. Guests will not be able to request an alternative afternoon activity from the group, except by prior arrangement with Rhino Walking Safaris. Should guests want a ‘private’ walk, the reservation team will need to know at least 7 working days ahead of arrival to source an additional guide, the cost of which would be for the guests account.
Sleep Outs, Elevated Platforms
Unrivalled wilderness experience - Guests wanting to enjoy a unique experience will be able walk out to our “Sleep Outs” on elevated wooden platforms (weather permitting).
Elevated wooden platforms - This is the only place in the Kruger National Park offering this unusual accommodation. Guests will leave Plains Camp in the late afternoon and arrive at the platforms in the early evening carrying a lightweight rucksack containing a change of clothes, a pillowcase, a sheet inner for the sleeping bag and refreshments.
Sundowners overlooking the waterhole - After hanging up mosquito nets, fly sheets (only if necessary) and preparing beds sundowners can be enjoyed on the platforms that also overlook a waterhole.
Wilderness at night - While dinner is being prepared for our guests on an open fire, they will enjoy sounds and senses, heightened as they share the wilderness at night, while being safely guarded by our observant guides. The rumble of the elephant passing by or the roar of the lion at the nearby waterhole, are the only noises that might disturb guests in this peaceful wilderness. The following morning, guests will enjoy a light snack after which they will depart back to Plains Camp for a hearty brunch.
Sleep Out Notes - The Sleep Out’s are highly dependant on weather conditions PLEASE be aware that should the weather be unfavourable on the day of the Sleep Out (heavy rain) or if there has been heavy rain in the days preceding their Sleep Out, you may have to remain in camp (due to the platforms being inaccessible).
